Æthelstan: The First King of England By Sarah Foot

My first two “Books of the Month” were simple and easily read books on Anglo Saxon History and King Æthelstan, They were chosen to whet your appetite and hopefully inspire some of you to produce your own paper or short talk for presentation at one of your Court meetings.

Æthelstan: The First King of England is in a totally different academic class to those first two books of the month. It is written by Professor Sarah Foot and is one of the best, if not the best, books ever written on the subject and a definitive biography of the king.

I am not qualified to write an authoritative review on this book, therefore I point you to a review written in 2011 by a contemporary historical author Rory Naismith, who completed his doctorate at the University of Cambridge (Clare College) in 2009, and has been a lecturer in medieval history at Kings College London since 2015. He has published extensively on medieval history, especially from an economic and monetary perspective.

I hope that you enjoy the book. It is a great reference book for all those interested in King Æthelstan
